SUMMARY:World Immunisation Week 2020
DESCRIPTION:World Immunization Week – celebrated in the last week of April (24 to 30 April) – aims to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. Immunization saves millions of lives every year and is widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions. Yet\, there are still nearly 20 million children in the world today who are not getting the vaccines they need. \nThe theme this year is #VaccinesWork for All and the campaign will focus on how vaccines – and the people who develop\, deliver and receive them – are heroes by working to protect the health of everyone\, everywhere. \nSteady progress but fragile gains\nIn 2018\, an estimated 116 million children were vaccinated with received 3 doses of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP3) vaccine\, protecting them against infectious diseases that can cause serious illness and disability or be fatal. Many low- and middle-income countries have taken huge strides in increasing immunization coverage. \nBut despite gains\, all targets for disease elimination – including measles\, rubella and maternal and neonatal tetanus – are unlikely to be achieved by the end of 2020. Over the last two years\, the world has seen multiple outbreaks of measles\, diphtheria\, pertussis and other vaccine-preventable diseases. \nFor everyone\, everywhere to survive and thrive\, countries must intensify efforts to ensure all people receive the lifesaving benefits of vaccines. Additionally\, those countries that have achieved or made progress towards the goals must work to sustain the progress they have made. \n“Vaccines are one of our most important tools for preventing outbreaks and keeping the world safe. While most children today are being vaccinated\, far too many are left behind. Unacceptably\, it’s often those who are most at risk– the poorest\, the most marginalized\, those touched by conflict or forced from their homes – who are persistently missed.” \n– Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus\, Director-General of the World Health Organization \n2020 campaign objectives\nThe main goal of the campaign is to urge greater engagement around immunization globally and the importance of vaccination in improving health and wellbeing of everyone\, everywhere throughout life. \nAs part of the 2020 campaign\, WHO and partners aim to: \n\nDemonstrate the value of vaccines for the health of children\, communities and the world.\nShow how routine immunization is the foundation for strong\, resilient health systems and universal health coverage.\nHighlight the need to build on immunization progress while addressing gaps\, including through increased investment in vaccines and immunization.\n\nGiven that WHO has designated 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife\, WHO will highlight nurses and midwives for their crucial role as early vaccine champions for new parents and parents-to-be. \nWhy immunization matters\nExpanding access to immunization is vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals\, poverty reduction and universal health coverage. Routine immunization provides a point of contact for health care at the beginning of life and offers every child the chance at a healthy life\, from the earliest beginnings and into old age. \nImmunization is also a fundamental strategy in achieving other health priorities\, from controlling viral hepatitis\, to curbing antimicrobial resistance\, and providing a platform for adolescent health and improving antenatal and newborn care.

SUMMARY:Parkinson's Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Parkinson’s Awareness Week aims to raise awareness about this potentially devastating condition. \nDuring this week\, individuals are encouraged to hold their own event with family\, friends and colleagues. These events support the awareness and research work for Parkinson’s UK (formerly known as the Parkinson’s Disease Society). \nFunding is needed for vital research work into the causes and treatments of Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s UK also works to support those living day to day with this condition. \nEach year Parkinson’s Awareness Week focuses on a different aspect of this condition. For example during 2014\, the main focus was ‘Control’\, which raised awareness about how people with this disease control and live with the symptoms and progressive nature of Parkinson’s. \nAnother focus of Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Week is to increase media coverage of this condition. The greater the coverage the more people know what it is like to live or care for somebody with Parkinson’s Disease. \nParkinson’s Disease In Brief\nWhat is Parkinson’s Disease?\nA progressive neurological condition\, Parkinson’s Disease affects actions including talking\, walking and writing. Parkinson’s Disease is named after a London doctor\, Dr James Parkinson (1755-1824) who identified Parkinson’s Disease as a condition in its own right. \nWhat is Parkinsonism?\nOther disorders and Diseases can also include the major symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinsonism is the term given to the collective symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease and other related Diseases. Often referred to as idiopathic* Parkinson’s Disease\, Parkinson’s Disease is the most common form of parkinsonism. Other types of parkinsonism include progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Both progressive supra nuclear and multiple system atrophy are rarer conditions than Parkinson’s Disease. \n*idiopathic referring to unknown cause. \nWhat causes Parkinson’s Disease?\nParkinson’s Disease arises due to a loss of nerve cells in the substantia nigra; a part of the brain affected by Parkinson’s Disease. Nerve cells in the substantia nigra produce the chemical dopamine\, a neurotransmitter\, which transmits nerve impulses and allows signals to be sent to other areas of the brain which coordinate movement. A reduction in these dopamine producing cells causes reduced function in the areas of the brain responsible for coordinating movement. About an 80% reduction in dopamine will bring on the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. \nWhat are the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease? \nMotor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease include tremor\, slowness of movement (known as bradykinesia) and stiffness or rigidity of muscles. \nNon motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease may also be experienced. These include constipation\, depression\, sleep disturbances and urinary urgency. \nThese are often differences in severity and the type of symptoms displayed between individuals. \nWhat research is being taken into Parkinson’s Disease?\nResearch into Parkinson’s Disease broadly falls into two categories: genetic and environment research. \nGenetic research into Parkinson’s Disease has so far identified 9 genes linked to this condition. The parkin gene is the gene most commonly associated with Parkinson’s Disease. Scientific research aims to determine which factors are involved in the creation\, maintenance and destruction of the dopamine producing neurons. \nEnvironment research into Parkinson’s Disease focuses on possible environmental factors associated with Parkinson’s Disease. \nIs there a way to prevent Parkinson’s Disease?\nAt present there is no way to prevent Parkinson’s Disease. However\, current research is focusing on finding a biochemical abnormality which all individuals with Parkinson’s Disease might share. However such findings would help more to predict not prevent Parkinson’s Disease. These biochemical abnormalities are known as biomarkers. \nIf discovered\, a biomarker could be found through a chemical test given to individuals who currently do not show any symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Screening techniques could also be used to show the presences of a biomarker. \nThere are rare cases where individuals have an inherited form of Parkinson’s Disease. With such cases researchers could test for known genetic mutations as a means to determine an individual’s risk of having the disease.

SUMMARY:Endometriosis Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Every March Endometriosis Month takes place across the world\, with the aim of increasing awareness and highlighting the symptoms of this debilitating condition that affects an estimated 176 million women worldwide. \nEndometriosis can have a devastating effect on the quality of life of sufferers of this condition due to the painful symptoms that the disease carries and the fact that it is the biggest cause of infertility in women. Although this is a condition that affects 1 in 10 women\, the average diagnosis can take up to 7 and a half years\, and with this unacceptably long diagnosis time\, the main focus of the event is to raise awareness of the symptoms of Endometriosis with the goal being more women receiving diagnosis and treatment earlier. \nFind out more about the symptoms of Endometriosis here. You can also get involved in the chat on twitter using the hashtag #EndometriosisAwarenessMonth

SUMMARY:Walk All Over Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Walk All Over Cancer is a fundraising and activity challenge that occurs annually every March in aid of the charity Cancer Research UK. Participants are challenged to a sponsored walk of 10\,000 steps every day during the month\, and all proceeds from the fundraising are donated to the charity. \nCancer Research UK funds research into cancer treatment and prevention across the world\, working to develop new cancer drugs and provide the latest cancer information about cancer treatment and prevention to both health professionals and the public. \nParticipants can share details of their progress using the hashtag #walkallovercancer and walks can be either solo or walkers can challenge their friends and family to join them\, or even take part with local walking groups. The NHS recommends 10\,000 steps per day for optimum health\, however with increasingly sedentary lives\, many people do not reach this amount\, and so the challenge is an opportunity to improve your own health as well as raise money for a good cause. By taking 10\,000 steps per day\, walkers will achieve 150 miles by the end of the month. \nAnybody interested in getting involved in Walk All Over Cancer will find further resources including free printable materials and information on fundraising and tracking steps at www.cancerresearchuk.org.

SUMMARY:Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:When a woman is diagnosed at the earliest stage\, her chance of surviving ovarian cancer for five years or more doubles from just 46 per cent to more than 90 per cent. \nHowever\, nearly half of GPs mistakenly believe symptoms only present in the later stages of the disease\, and less than a third of women in the UK are confident they know the symptoms. \nThis year\, tens of thousands of symptoms leaflets were read\, thousands of cakes were baked\, hundreds of outlandish outfits worn and more teapots brewed than we could count all with one aim in mind to get more women diagnosed at the earliest stage. Your fundraising means we will be able to do more to improve early diagnosis\, fund more life-saving research and provide much-needed support. \nhttps://www.targetovariancancer.org.uk/tags/ovarian-cancer-awareness-month

SUMMARY:Rare Disease Day 2020
DESCRIPTION:Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. The campaign targets primarily the general public and also seeks to raise awareness amongst policy makers\, public authorities\, industry representatives\, researchers\, health professionals and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases. \nBuilding awareness of rare diseases is so important because 1 in 20 people will live with a rare disease at some point in their life. Despite this\, there is no cure for the majority of rare diseases and many go undiagnosed. Rare Disease Day improves knowledge amongst the general public of rare diseases while encouraging researchers and decision makers to address the needs of those living with rare diseases. \nRare Disease Day events are down to hundreds of patient organisations all over the world who work on a local and national level to raise awareness for the rare disease community in their countries. Since Rare Disease Day was first launched by EURORDIS and its Council of National Alliances in 2008\, thousands of events have taken place throughout the world reaching hundreds of thousands of people and resulting in a great deal of media coverage. We especially thank our official Rare Disease Day partners\, the National Alliances. These are umbrella organisations who group together several rare disease organisations in a given country or region. Click on a logo of one of the National Alliances to go to their website. \nThe campaign started as a European event and has progressively become a world phenomenon\, with the USA joining in 2009 and participation in 94 countries all over the world in 2018. Hundreds of cities continue to take part in Rare Disease Day and we hope even more will join in 2018. \nSome countries have decided to raise rare disease awareness further\, for example\, Spain declared 2013 as the National Year for Rare Diseases. The first Rare Disease Day was celebrated in 2008 on 29 February\, a rare‚date that happens only once every four years. Ever since then\, Rare Disease Day has taken place on the last day of February\, a month known for having a rare‚number of days. \nhttps://www.rarediseaseday.org/

SUMMARY:Time to Talk Day
DESCRIPTION:Time To Talk Day brings the nation together to get talking and break the silence around mental health problems. View our short video to see what we got up to in 2019 and watch this space for our plans for Time To Talk Day next year – which will take place on 6 February 2020\nToo often\, people who experience a mental health problem are also expected to take the lead on talking about mental health in the wider sense. Time To Talk Day encourages everyone to talk about mental health. \nMental health problems affect one in four of us yet people are still afraid to talk about it. For people with mental health problems not being able to talk about it can be one of the worst parts of the illness. So by getting people talking about mental health we can break down stereotypes\, improve relationships\, aid recovery and take the stigma out of something that affects us all. \nSince Time To Talk Day first launched in 2014\, it has sparked millions of conversations in schools\, homes\, workplaces\, in the media and online. \nhttps://www.time-to-change.org.uk/

SUMMARY:World Cancer Day 2020
DESCRIPTION:At the start of the millennium\, 4 February was declared World Cancer Day. It began with six cancer experts who convened in Paris in 1999. With the year 2000 imminent\, the group was determined that the global challenge of cancer would not be forgotten in the new century. \nTogether\, the six leaders – Drs David Kayat\, Peter Harper\, James F. Holland\, Gabriel N. Horobagyi\, Lawrence H. Einhorn and Sandra Swain – drafted a Charter that outlined a vision for addressing the impact of cancer on “human life\, human suffering and on the productivity of nations”. \nThe Charter highlights the need for access to quality care\, funding for cancer research\, greater understanding and above all respect and dignity for all individuals living with the disease. \nThe final article set out the idea for an international awareness day: \n“Recognising the declaration by all appropriate institutions that February 4 shall be marked as ‘World Cancer Day’ so that each year\, the Charter of Paris will be in the hearts and minds of people around the world.” \nThis document became known as the Charter of Paris Against Cancer. \nOn the 4 February 2000\, the Charter was signed by then President of France\, Jacques Chirac and then General Director of UNESCO\, Kōichirō Matsuura. \nRead the full text of the Paris Charter (PDF) \nA growing\, global movement\nThe Charter has been adopted by international cancer organisations around the world. Under the guardianship of the Union for International Cancer Control since 2006\, World Cancer Day has grown into a positive movement for everyone\, everywhere to unite under one voice\, building an alliance against “fear\, ignorance and complacency.” \n20th anniversary\nSince the creation of World Cancer Day\, we have witnessed incredible progress in many areas\, from increased political will\, technological advancements\, research breakthroughs\, and greater public understanding of the disease. However\, in 2019 the World Health Organization included Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs)\, including cancer\, as one of top ten threats to public health. There is still much more to be done. \n2020 marks the 20th anniversary of World Cancer Day. It will be a year to ignite action to accelerate the reduction of unnecessary cancer deaths and to achieve equal access to cancer care for all. \nJoin us on 4 February\, 2020. \nhttps://www.worldcancerday.org/20thanniversary

SUMMARY:National Apprenticeship Week 2020
DESCRIPTION:National Apprenticeship Week is an annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships across England and is a time to recognise and applaud apprenticeship success stories across the country. \nApprenticeship employers use the opportunity to promote the success of their apprentices and highlight the huge benefits to other employers\, of all sizes\, who are thinking of taking on an apprentice. \nApprentices across the country will also be celebrated throughout the week\, with engagement and events in schools and colleges. Many current and former apprentices will go back to school to tell their story\, attracting the next generation of apprentices\, so they too can fire up their future career. \nThroughout the 13 years\, National Apprenticeship Week has brought together apprenticeship supporters from across the country\, with MPs\, ambassadors\, apprentices\, training providers and top employers involved in recognising the value and importance of apprenticeships. \nFor NAW2020 we want even more people to get behind the week\, to build on last year’s success\, which included: \n\nOver 1250 events taking place across England;\n\nNAW2019\, National Apprenticeship Week and #BlazeATrail all trending UK wide on Twitter over the course of the Week; \n\nOver 30\,000 unique visits to the NAW resource pages on GOV.UK;\nAnd a hugely successful #askanapprentice day with employers\, including TUI\, Bentley Careers\, Siemens UK\, AXA Insurance and Cisco all getting involved.\n\nAnne Milton\, Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills said: \n“I am thrilled that National Apprenticeship Week 2020 will take place during early February 2020. It’s a chance to celebrate apprentices and the brilliant work being done by schools\, the FE sector and employers across the country to promote the huge benefits of apprenticeships. \n“Apprenticeships offer people of all ages and backgrounds a high-quality route to skilled employment with the option to train at every level in a range of exciting professions like aerospace engineering\, data science\, teaching\, law\, nursing\, and fashion. \n“This year we had over 1250 events and 1900 articles and features in publications from the Financial Times to Cosmopolitan. I would encourage employers\, training providers\, schools\, apprentices and our ambassador networks to start considering how they will get involved in National Apprenticeship Week 2020.  We want next year to be even bigger and better reaching even more people and employers so they understand the advantages apprenticeships bring”. \nFor more information about NHS apprenticeships in Northampton\, please visit our Northamptonshire NHS apprenticeships page.
